Five hundred, twenty five thousand, six hundred minutes
Five hundred, twenty five thousand moments so dear
Five hundred, twenty five thousand, six hundred minutes
How do you measure, measure a year?
-Jonathan Larson, RENT.
Happy New Year!
I wrote the following song on January 3rd, 2022. (Exactly two years ago!) I had just finished watching Tick…Tick…BOOM! and I was reading more about Jonathan Larson’s life. One of his loved ones shared that he used to love calling up his friends and going for walks in the park when it snowed. I love that detail.
I am constantly inspired by Jonathan’s life and artistry. I could truly go on and on. But I think I’d like to just let the song speak for itself, and maybe say more later. Scroll to the end to hear/watch me sing it. Lyrics below.
Here’s to you, Jonathan.
And suddenly all the trees are white
And you’re still writing last year’s date
You can’t believe a new one has come again
And it’s alright
And it’s alright
And just like that they’re taking down the lights
But you still have your Christmas tree
It’s cheesy but you’ve gotta stay warm inside
Merry and Bright
Merry and Bright
All my friends are going through it
Wind is wrapped around our shoulders
Colder than before
Still we endure
Feel like like kids in dressed up shoes
God I don’t know what to do
But dance in the storm
We could dance in the storm
It’s just 4* weeks but January won’t end
So I’ll just walk through Central Park
Singing last year’s tune, I don’t know this one yet
And it’s alright
And it’s alright
*I know that January is a little over 4 weeks long. Technically almost 5. Thus proving my point that it is a long month.
PS - Last night was the kick-off of New Year, New Authentic You and it was incredible!! More details here if you’re interested in joining our conversation next week.
